We’ll give you a rundown of the specs, how the scopes work, and a detailed technical overview so that you know what you’re getting and what you’ll pay for it.  We’ve also included information about Vortex Optics, what users have to say about the Strike Eagle, and some thoughts on other scopes that might fit the bill too.

Every one of these Vortex scopes is built to improve your accuracy on a variety of shots, including short and long range, as well as technical or tactical shooting.  They are best used on semi-automatic rifles like the AR15, Ruger Mini series, or the ARAK 21 that feature modern technology and are built for sporting or leisure.

Each of the Vortex Strike Eagle models includes a variable zoom that gives it versatility in a range of shooting situations, and users report that they work particularly well in competition or tactical shooting.  They also perform well in hunting situations, specifically when targeting small varmint or fast-moving predators. 

Here is a breakdown of the specifications on each of the models.

4-24x50

The Vortex Strike Eagle models are named by their magnification and objective lens size, and the 4-24x50 is the high-end model.  The most expensive of the bunch, it features magnification settings between 2 and 24 times and has the largest objective lens in the Strike Eagle models that measures 50mm in diameter. 

This model has an eye relief at 3.5 inches, and a wide field of view at 26.2-4.3 feet/100 yards.  The reticle is an EBR4, a favorite of long-distance shooters for it’s ranging abilities.  This feature makes it easy to determine an accurate range, make windage corrections, and get a lead on moving targets. 

The largest and heaviest option, the tube is 30 mm, it’s 14.9 inches long, and it weighs in at 25.6 ounces.  

From an adjustment standpoint, the 4-24x50 incorporates a tactical turret that’s easy to use, and has a .25 MOA graduation and travels 12 MOA per rotation.  This scope is limited to a max elevation and windage adjustment of 80 MOA, and the parallax setting is set at 20 yards to infinity.

3-18x44

For $ less, the 3-18x44 riflescope offers many of the same features as the higher end model, and many users find it to be comparable and equally as effective.

As its name suggests, it has a 3-18 x magnification and a 44mm objective lens diameter.  The eye relief has a range between 3.5 and 4.1 inches, and the field of view is 34.5-5.7 feet/100 yards.  It has the same EBR4 reticle as its more expensive counterpart.

If the weight of your rifle scope is an important factor, you’ll note that the 3-18x44 is both lighter and a bit smaller than the 4-24x50.  It has a 30mm tube and measures 13.5 inches long. It weighs 23.9 ounces.

This model also uses a tactical style turret with a .25 MOA graduation that travels 12 MOA per rotation.  Despite the same parallax setting of 20 yards to infinity, a notable difference is that the 3-18x44 has a max windage and elevation adjustment of 120 MOA.

1-8x24

Specifically designed for the AR-15, the Strike Eagle 1-8x24 is an adaptable option that’s perfectly suited to a variety of shooting needs and styles.  With a true 1x magnification included on the low end of the spectrum, you can use this scope for anything from home defense to recreational shooting with accuracy.  The 8x zoom range makes it easy to sight your target, and the 24mm objective lens is a versatile fan favorite. 

This model as a 3.5-inch eye relief and a 116.6-14.4 feet/100 yards field of view.  It has an AR-BDC2 glass-etched reticle that works notably well with 5.56 ammo.

The main difference between this and the 1-6x24, and the more expensive scopes listed above other than their magnification capacities and price is the turret style.  This model features a capped turret with 1/2 adjustment graduation.  

Every rotation has 44 MOA of travel, and you have a max elevation and wind age adjustment of 100 MOA.  The parallax setting on this model is an even 100 yards.

Despite its durable, high-quality construction, this scope is compact and lightweight.  The 30 mm tube is only 10 inches long, and it weighs just 16.5 ounces, making it the lightest weight option in the Strike Eagle line up.

1-6x24

Although the Strike Eagle 1-6x24 is the least expensive scope in this class, it’s far from your basic entry-level model.  Perfect for AR shooters who need accuracy at a point-blank range, or those who want to extend their capabilities and see a crisp, clear visual on their target in a low-light situation.

Here you have a 1-6x magnification range and an objective lens that measure 24 mm.  Like the other scopes in this line, the eye relief is 3.5 inches, and the field of view comes in at 116.5-19.2 feet/100 yards.  The 1-6x24 has an AR-BDC reticle which is considered an entry-level option with it’s easy to sight centered red halo for simple target acquisition. 

This model also has a capped turret with a 1/2 MOA adjustment graduation that ravels 44 MOA per rotation.  You can adjust to a maximum of 140 MOA on both elevation and windage with this Vortex scope. Like it’s higher-end counterpart, the parallax setting is 100 yards.

The main difference outside of price and magnification between this model and the 1-8x24 is its size.  This option has a 30mm tube that is 10.5 inches long and heavier than the higher end model at 17.6 ounces.

When you’re shopping around for holographic sights, you will notice that the price varies greatly. Cheapest isn’t always the best option, but you can find a high-quality sight within your budget (it just may be lacking certain features).

It’s more important to look for a holographic sight that is durable and is easy to use. Keep in mind that a holographic sight is meant to make hitting your target fast and easy; if you have to make constant adjustments to the sight, it may not be worth your time and money.

If you’re able to test out a sight in-person before buying that will be the best way to determine if it’s the best sight for you. If you don’t have the option to try one out in a store, make sure that there is a return or full-refund policy in place just in case it’s not the right sight for you.

You can spend thousands of dollars on a single piece of kit. It will probably be one of the coolest things you own, but still, we’re talking about thousands of dollars.

High-end scopes are tempting because they offer features and vision that truly can’t be beaten. They’re definitely collectors’ items, and they make amateurs feel a bit more professional. You can’t put a price on that.

By now, you’ve probably thought of just such a scope – and it’s probably a Leupold, which make some of the best scopes in the business.

But we want to talk about a different brand: Elcan.

Elcan produces high-end military optics. If you’ve heard of them, your source was probably a buddy in the Special Forces, where Elcan scopes aren’t just mandatory but indispensable.

But if you’ve got the time and the money, you can own this incredible scope for yourself. But is it worth it? What’s even a rifle scope for?

We’ll review the Elcan SpecterDR to find out whether this single dream scope is worth the price of five inferior scopes.

Compared to other scopes, it’s heavy and expensive (we mean really expensive). Still, there’s something there because it’s loved by those who need accuracy and efficiency most – the military.


How does it stack up against its competition? Let’s find out.

Who Is Elcan?

Elcan doesn’t have the brand name power that other accessories brands have, but that’s in part why we love it. It’s lack of appeal as a household name isn’t a reflection of its capabilities or popularity. Instead, the company just doesn’t worry about public perception and focuses on what matters most: performance.

If you haven’t heard of Elcan, don’t worry. It’s not new or unestablished. In fact, Elcan has a very high profile among the Canadian, Danish, Dutch, and Norwegian militaries, who all order Elcan optics for their troops.

You may find the reticle a bit busy for your taste, but newer models do include a simpler option. Still, you’ll find the reticle is at its best when you’re making 500-750-yard shots at a 4x scope: while the clarity of the glass is essential, the BDC reticle makes all the difference in helping you find the proper holdover.

You’ll also notice that the scope is heavy – really heavy. There’s no explaining the extraordinary weight, but you can be sure that it is very durable, so that likely plays at least a minor role in the weight.

Finally, the magnification is often read as 1-4x as in offering magnification settings between one to four. This is not the case: you have the option between 1 or 4x. However, there’s a lever included that makes the transition seamless. Use the level to flip between the two without missing a beat. The lever is one of the coolest features on the scope.

Set-Up

Inside the box, you’ll get the scope, an instruction manual, and a battery.

Word on the street says that the packaging is lackluster, so if yours arrives in a plain brown box, you’re in good company.

There’s little security bar some light cardboard, so it’s probably a good idea to opt for secured shipping.

Sure, it’s robust, but shipping companies can do serious damage to products regardless. The last thing you need is a broken $2000+ scope.

Otherwise, set up is easy as long as you follow the instructions.

It’s simple to fit it to many common rifles and even a machine gun if that’s your thing.

One thing to note about set-up is the weight. When you’re looking at it online, 23 ounces sounds fine because the features are fantastic.

However, you’ll notice the weight if you have to hike it somewhere. Plus, the ARMS mount adds even more weight to the scope.

So be wary if you like to be on the move for long periods of time.

A Short Shot: Hitting the Range

A versatile scope like this one should perform perfectly at multiple distances, but is this the case? After all, you’ve got a very limited magnification range (1-4x), so surely your field of vision should be limited, too.

At 25 yards and 1x magnification, you’ll be treated to a high-quality picture. It’s bright, clear, and it really hits home how powerful a 1x can be. The biggest thing to note is that the excellence in the picture isn’t just in the center or at the target – it extends through the whole picture, which differentiates it significantly from other scopes like the ACOG.

It’s a dream at 25 yards, but what about 100 yards or 400 yards?

When you’re lining up a 400-yard shot with a magnification of 4x, you’ll get the same sort of picture. Some suggest that the instant change is so accurate that you’ll have to try to miss. Though, knowledge of your rifle and load will always help you use the scope most efficiently.

The optic is good for around 500 yards, but it’s not a long-distance scope, so excessive ballistics knowledge of every rifle you try it on isn’t wholly necessary.

Finally, how does it stand up to a few hundred rounds? As far as we can tell, you’ll need to hit the high hundreds and early thousands before the reticle moves away from zero or the picture suffers. Even after 500 rounds, Elcan SpecterDR operates like it was just installed.

Practical Uses

The Elcan SpecterDR is suitable for plenty of guns, but its usage is limited to short and medium-range applications.

Self-defense and home use are standard applications. If you’re a competitor, you will use it for three-gun competitions. Bring it out hunting for close-range hunting.

Think of it as the swiss army knife of optics. It has loads of applications for nearby shots. But don’t go trying to cut down a tree with it.

Elcan itself likes to note that the scope offers enough practical uses that you’d need two scopes to do the same thing without it. We think it’s a great point: one scope to rule them all (and save on weight).

The Bottom Line

You’ll struggle to find an optic this strong for close range shooting elsewhere on the market. However, you’ll also struggle to find one this expensive as well.

You’ll find scopes that do the job at a far lower price point, but you won’t have quite as much fun with them.

What Makes It Unique

There are three things that make it unique compared to other products in Elcan’s own range.

First, it fits a staggering range of guns including machine guns. What’s more, the performance doesn’t suffer when switching guns. While other scopes are designed specifically for AR15s or .22 rifles, you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of this no matter where you attach it.

It’s also good for multiple uses, which is also difficult to find.

In use, the main selling point is the field of view. Scopes at all price points focus on the target area picture first, and there’s a reason for that. However, being able to see every corner of your field of view with the same clarity and brightness as the target makes the rifle is exceptional, which improves even further on the multiple uses aspect because it’s good in all kinds of conditions.

The field of vision really is the unique selling point. It’s also probably why you might casually spot some Special Forces members walking around with them.

Pricing

The Elcan SpecterDR rings in at around $2,100. It’s a professional grade scope for professional uses. But the price isn’t far off its competitors. The next closest scope is the Mark 4 HAMR 4x24 mm with DeltaPoint, and it would set you back just south of $2,000. (The Mark 4 HAMR is no longer available for purchase).

You can find short and medium-range scopes for a fraction of the price, but none of them will amaze you.

 The Elcan Specter DR is a professional scope. It’s beloved by Special Forces types with specific operational requirements. No one is out buying a $2,000 scope just for shooting raccoons – well, there’s always one.

Public perception of the scope recognizes that it’s a professional-grade scope made for the front lines, but a few comments stand out.

Durability

The Elcan SpecterDR as being a very durable scope – the kind you can run over without shattering.

Durability isn’t something we’re normally worried about with a scope because a $100 scope is easily replaced. For $2,000, we expect it to become a family heirloom.

Everything from the body to the knobs and lever is heavy-duty and ready to work. The whole thing is drawn together through a combination of basic and stable construction with precision in the essential areas, like the magnification lever.

Because the controls are outside the body of the scope, you don’t have to fiddle around with the internal components.

Field of Vision

The field of vision is majestically large even at 4x. With a field of vision ranging between 34.2 feet at 4x and 146.3 feet at zero, you’ll never be lost.

It truly shows off the scope’s usability because the extended field of vision helps when your stalking prey, but it also gives a magnified view without damaging your situational awareness.

Intuitive Throw Lever

One of the best-loved features on this scope is that it switches from a 1x setting to a 4x setting without missing a beat. It achieves this through the use of the throw lever that switches between the two bookend settings instantaneously.

Even if you have no practical application for using it, it’s still very cool to look at.

Etched Reticle

The battery is a point of complaint because it’s an uncommon battery with 600 hours of charge. But because the reticle is etched into the glass, you’re not out of luck if your battery runs out and you don’t have the backup.

The other features won’t do you much good, but you’ll still have the sight.

Narrow Viewing Angle

While the field of vision is massive, some people complain about the narrow viewing angle of the scope. If you have this complaint, you might also find the eye box to be too small.

The narrow viewing angle is a deal breaker for some: there’s no point in using a scope you can’t see into.

How It Compares

Compared to like scopes, the Elcan Specter DR offers a different value proposition. The objective lens on the Specter DR (32 mm) is far bigger than on comparative Leupold models (24 mm).


It’s also significantly longer and heavier than most scopes on the market including Leupold models. You might be inclined to think they charge by the ounce, but it’s not true.


Overall, the optics and glass are better on this scope compared to almost every other available product on the market. The main competitors are equally priced, and one model is no longer available.


What We Think

If you’ve got a use for it or the cash to pay for it, you’ll love this scope. However, it’s not a necessary item outside of combat zones, which is where you’ll make the most of the features like the field of vision.


You can get a perfectly suitable scope for a far more enticing price.

However, if you can afford it and you’re ready to be amazed, then you’ll get every penny’s worth of your investment in the Elcan Specter DR.

Are you new to guns or simply never thought you needed a scope before?

A scope dramatically improves your accuracy by providing a clear, well-lit picture from hundreds of yards away.


The right scope allows you to snag the biggest buck you’ve ever seen after hours of tracking it. But it’s possible to buy the wrong scope, and while you may see the deer, an ill-suited scope could throw off your shot, ruining your chances.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

Every scope is accompanied by several numbers that represent its specs in a standardized format.


The first number represents magnification while the second represents the diameter of the objective lens. These numbers are separated by the letter “x.”

Magnification represents how large an image becomes when you look at it through your scope.


If the specs of the scope state 3-9x22mm, then you’ll be able to adjust the scope to see objects between three and nine times the size you’d see with the naked eye.


The diameter of the objective lens, or the front lens, in millimeters. So, in a 3-9x22mm scope, the size of the lens is 22 millimeters. We’ll talk more about the objective lens later in the guide.

Optical Power - Magnification

Optical power, or magnification, is the key element in making a buying decision because it deliminates the scope’s usefulness for your purposes.

A scope too weak for your needs is only slightly better than not using a scope at all.


Generally speaking, scopes with a lower magnification (3, 4, 5, 6, etc.), allows you to shoot faster and more intuitively and easier track targets.


Higher numbers provide greater resolution and are ideal for hitting precise targets, but they’re difficult to use in an unsupported position because they’re both longer and heavier.


Here’s a basic rule of thumb: if your target is less than 500 yards away, stick with a scope lower than 10x.


If you’re using a rifle in a supported position (like behind sandbags), then you’ll be better equipped to take on a scope with a magnification of 10x and greater.

Objective Lens Size – Diameter of the Lens

The objective lens on a scope transmits the ambient light that brings an image into focus. Larger lenses, therefore, let in more light and bring in clearer brighter images. Often, you’ll find a larger objective lens with higher magnification ratings.


Generally, larger lenses produce better images. However, there are caveats to this.


A larger objective lens doesn’t necessarily improve image quality at all magnifications. For example, there’s little difference between a 40mm and 50 mm diameters in low magnification settings, but the difference in size becomes apparent above 12x magnification.


Additionally, there are a few downsides in using larger objective lenses. Larger lenses require a higher mounting, which impacts your ability to shoot.


In other words, a large scope may better allow you to see the target but could throw off your ability to pull off the shot.

Reticles

Reticles are the patterns shown on the inside of your scope that frame your target. There are dozens of patterns to choose from ranging from simple to complex.


The most common reticles are the duplex, mildot, and BDC reticles. These three reticles feature four lines are leading from the four cardinal directions of your scope with a center designed to direct your eye for accuracy.

Duplex:

  • Target features four lines at a cross
  • Focuses eye towards the center of the scope
  • Aids low light
  • Best for target shooting and hunting

Mildot:

  • Based on the duplex pattern with added enhancements
  • Dots move across the cross according to milliradians
  • Allows you to see range when size is known
  • Best for adjusting for elevation and wind
  • Standard reticle for law enforcement and military
  • Best for rifle use over 300 yards

BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator):

  • Several points included in a pattern corresponding to distance
  • Only available for use with certain cartridges
  • Moderately accurate for ranges over 500 yards
  • Ideal for general purpose carbine or rifle

These basic features should give you a clearer idea of what kind of scope is best suited for your needs. Of course, there’s more to consider including adjustment systems, focal planes, and parallax, but it’s the specs and reticles that help you narrow down your scope from the wide number of products available.

Cons

An issue can lie in image clarity and eye relief between low and high magnification. Lower magnification keeps a clear picture, but eye relief at higher magnifications can become inconsistent. The edges of the view can sometimes have an issue with becoming a bit fuzzy. In addition with sight, those with vision problems can find the BDC 600 reticle a bit difficult to read. A further complaint about the BDC 600 is that the bubbles can appear too small.

In regards to the turrets, the hash marks may not exactly align with the adjustment line. The actual line may sit slightly off. More with the turrets, they cannot be locked in. After your zero has been set, an accidental bump may be able to reset it.

Another area of concern lies in the size and weight of the various Nikon M-223s. They can range from around 13 oz. like the 1-4×20 BDC 600 to 19 oz. such as the 4-16×42 model. Some may find the models leaning toward the heavier end, and thus more difficult to maneuver fast and shoot rapid fire at targets from varying distances.

On the size end, the scope can be too long for an AR without a mount. It can cause the rear end to hang over the charging handle. That, in turn, brings some difficulty in accessing the handle to pull it back.

Other issues can crop up concerning the quality of certain pieces. There have been reports of the windage knob coming loose. Sometimes, when attempting to tighten the knob, the entire thing can break off. Weak or faulty screws are usually the culprit in this case.

Who Is This Product Best For?

The Nikon M-223 best suits ARs, especially AR-15s. As for their use, the line is an optimal choice for those interested in competitive shooting, hunting, or just firing off at the range. They also offer good value for the price, making the M-223 great for those on a budget.

To Sum It All Up

Nikon M-223 has an exceptional line of scopes built to last and hold up in numerous of conditions whether freezing rain or sunshine. The built-in technology gives you a crisp and bright picture regardless of the surrounding light. It is simple to adjust and it typically holds your zero well even if you are a little rough with it. The dial speed is also something to admire. It’s a functional scope for long-range shooting.

There are a few drawbacks such as the weight and the low-quality screws that can cause the windage knob to fall off. The lifetime warranty offered by Nikon doesn’t hurt either, so anything such as loose knobs can be replaced over time.
