High-end scopes are tempting because they offer features and vision that truly can’t be beaten. They’re definitely collectors’ items, and they make amateurs feel a bit more professional. You can’t put a price on that.

By now, you’ve probably thought of just such a scope – and it’s probably a Leupold, which make some of the best scopes in the business.

But we want to talk about a different brand: Elcan.

Elcan produces high-end military optics. If you’ve heard of them, your source was probably a buddy in the Special Forces, where Elcan scopes aren’t just mandatory but indispensable.

But if you’ve got the time and the money, you can own this incredible scope for yourself. But is it worth it? What’s even a rifle scope for?

Elcan doesn’t have the brand name power that other accessories brands have, but that’s in part why we love it. It’s lack of appeal as a household name isn’t a reflection of its capabilities or popularity. Instead, the company just doesn’t worry about public perception and focuses on what matters most: performance.

If you haven’t heard of Elcan, don’t worry. It’s not new or unestablished. In fact, Elcan has a very high profile among the Canadian, Danish, Dutch, and Norwegian militaries, who all order Elcan optics for their troops.

Sure, it’s robust, but shipping companies can do serious damage to products regardless. The last thing you need is a broken $2000+ scope.

Otherwise, set up is easy as long as you follow the instructions.

It’s simple to fit it to many common rifles and even a machine gun if that’s your thing.

One thing to note about set-up is the weight. When you’re looking at it online, 23 ounces sounds fine because the features are fantastic.

However, you’ll notice the weight if you have to hike it somewhere. Plus, the ARMS mount adds even more weight to the scope.

So be wary if you like to be on the move for long periods of time.

A Short Shot: Hitting the Range

A versatile scope like this one should perform perfectly at multiple distances, but is this the case? After all, you’ve got a very limited magnification range (1-4x), so surely your field of vision should be limited, too.

At 25 yards and 1x magnification, you’ll be treated to a high-quality picture. It’s bright, clear, and it really hits home how powerful a 1x can be. The biggest thing to note is that the excellence in the picture isn’t just in the center or at the target – it extends through the whole picture, which differentiates it significantly from other scopes like the ACOG.

It’s a dream at 25 yards, but what about 100 yards or 400 yards?

When you’re lining up a 400-yard shot with a magnification of 4x, you’ll get the same sort of picture. Some suggest that the instant change is so accurate that you’ll have to try to miss. Though, knowledge of your rifle and load will always help you use the scope most efficiently.

The optic is good for around 500 yards, but it’s not a long-distance scope, so excessive ballistics knowledge of every rifle you try it on isn’t wholly necessary.

Finally, how does it stand up to a few hundred rounds? As far as we can tell, you’ll need to hit the high hundreds and early thousands before the reticle moves away from zero or the picture suffers. Even after 500 rounds, Elcan SpecterDR operates like it was just installed.

Practical Uses

The Elcan SpecterDR is suitable for plenty of guns, but its usage is limited to short and medium-range applications.

Self-defense and home use are standard applications. If you’re a competitor, you will use it for three-gun competitions. Bring it out hunting for close-range hunting.

Think of it as the swiss army knife of optics. It has loads of applications for nearby shots. But don’t go trying to cut down a tree with it.

Elcan itself likes to note that the scope offers enough practical uses that you’d need two scopes to do the same thing without it. We think it’s a great point: one scope to rule them all (and save on weight).

The Bottom Line

You’ll struggle to find an optic this strong for close range shooting elsewhere on the market. However, you’ll also struggle to find one this expensive as well.

You’ll find scopes that do the job at a far lower price point, but you won’t have quite as much fun with them.

First, it fits a staggering range of guns including machine guns. What’s more, the performance doesn’t suffer when switching guns. While other scopes are designed specifically for AR15s or .22 rifles, you’ll get a lot of enjoyment out of this no matter where you attach it.

It’s also good for multiple uses, which is also difficult to find.

In use, the main selling point is the field of view. Scopes at all price points focus on the target area picture first, and there’s a reason for that. However, being able to see every corner of your field of view with the same clarity and brightness as the target makes the rifle is exceptional, which improves even further on the multiple uses aspect because it’s good in all kinds of conditions.

The field of vision really is the unique selling point. It’s also probably why you might casually spot some Special Forces members walking around with them.

The Elcan SpecterDR rings in at around $2,100. It’s a professional grade scope for professional uses. But the price isn’t far off its competitors. The next closest scope is the Mark 4 HAMR 4x24 mm with DeltaPoint, and it would set you back just south of $2,000. (The Mark 4 HAMR is no longer available for purchase).

You can find short and medium-range scopes for a fraction of the price, but none of them will amaze you.

Are you new to guns or simply never thought you needed a scope before?

A scope dramatically improves your accuracy by providing a clear, well-lit picture from hundreds of yards away.


The right scope allows you to snag the biggest buck you’ve ever seen after hours of tracking it. But it’s possible to buy the wrong scope, and while you may see the deer, an ill-suited scope could throw off your shot, ruining your chances.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

Every scope is accompanied by several numbers that represent its specs in a standardized format.


The first number represents magnification while the second represents the diameter of the objective lens. These numbers are separated by the letter “x.”

Magnification represents how large an image becomes when you look at it through your scope.


If the specs of the scope state 3-9x22mm, then you’ll be able to adjust the scope to see objects between three and nine times the size you’d see with the naked eye.


The diameter of the objective lens, or the front lens, in millimeters. So, in a 3-9x22mm scope, the size of the lens is 22 millimeters. We’ll talk more about the objective lens later in the guide.

Optical Power - Magnification

Optical power, or magnification, is the key element in making a buying decision because it deliminates the scope’s usefulness for your purposes.

A scope too weak for your needs is only slightly better than not using a scope at all.


Generally speaking, scopes with a lower magnification (3, 4, 5, 6, etc.), allows you to shoot faster and more intuitively and easier track targets.


Higher numbers provide greater resolution and are ideal for hitting precise targets, but they’re difficult to use in an unsupported position because they’re both longer and heavier.


Here’s a basic rule of thumb: if your target is less than 500 yards away, stick with a scope lower than 10x.


If you’re using a rifle in a supported position (like behind sandbags), then you’ll be better equipped to take on a scope with a magnification of 10x and greater.

Objective Lens Size – Diameter of the Lens

The objective lens on a scope transmits the ambient light that brings an image into focus. Larger lenses, therefore, let in more light and bring in clearer brighter images. Often, you’ll find a larger objective lens with higher magnification ratings.


Generally, larger lenses produce better images. However, there are caveats to this.


A larger objective lens doesn’t necessarily improve image quality at all magnifications. For example, there’s little difference between a 40mm and 50 mm diameters in low magnification settings, but the difference in size becomes apparent above 12x magnification.


Additionally, there are a few downsides in using larger objective lenses. Larger lenses require a higher mounting, which impacts your ability to shoot.


In other words, a large scope may better allow you to see the target but could throw off your ability to pull off the shot.

Reticles

Reticles are the patterns shown on the inside of your scope that frame your target. There are dozens of patterns to choose from ranging from simple to complex.


The most common reticles are the duplex, mildot, and BDC reticles. These three reticles feature four lines are leading from the four cardinal directions of your scope with a center designed to direct your eye for accuracy.

Duplex:

  • Target features four lines at a cross
  • Focuses eye towards the center of the scope
  • Aids low light
  • Best for target shooting and hunting

Mildot:

  • Based on the duplex pattern with added enhancements
  • Dots move across the cross according to milliradians
  • Allows you to see range when size is known

  • Best for rifle use over 300 yards

BDC (Bullet Drop Compensator):

  • Several points included in a pattern corresponding to distance
  • Only available for use with certain cartridges
  • Moderately accurate for ranges over 500 yards
  • Ideal for general purpose carbine or rifle

These basic features should give you a clearer idea of what kind of scope is best suited for your needs. Of course, there’s more to consider including adjustment systems, focal planes, and parallax, but it’s the specs and reticles that help you narrow down your scope from the wide number of products available.

The purpose of the design is to have a vertical center that is parallax free, allowing the built-in ranging to work properly and Trijicon claims it has no effect on the scope’s performance.

RMR Combo

Complaints, when purchased as a combination with the RMR, were too little eye relief because of how far back the RMR mounts. Also, because of the RMR height, there is more of an issue with parallax.

Limited Warranty

The tritium lamp has an illumination warranty of 15 years on fiber optic scopes. On a non-fiber optic model, the tritium lamp warranty is only 10 years.

Eye Relief

All models have a short eye relief at only 1.5 inches. This can be an issue for a scope that is used running and shooting in non-traditional stances. Plus, with short eye relief, the position of the shooter’s eye is very critical and it can take an extra second or two to find the right position.

Usage of the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 is currently heavy military and law enforcement. It has been used in combat more than any other magnified scope and handles recoil from a .22LR to a .50 BMG. And that was manufacturing exquisite lenses. Lenses that reshape your perception of reality – both literally and figuratively.

The sharpness of the image, the lighting of the field of view, the incredible accuracy and the superb pixel quality made Zeiss lenses something to be desired for every camera ever built on the face of the Earth. With that in mind, we should talk about Carl Zeiss scopes. Seeing that Zeiss is almost exclusively dedicated to the lenses, what can we make of the way the scopes are designed?

We should, however, mention the bullet drop compensation system by Zeiss which clearly is one of the best in the riflescope world. Also, Zeiss scopes reviews praise the Zeiss ballistic reticles for being far better than many companies which exclusively produce rifle scopes. It seems that Zeiss really know what their customers are actually after when they set their sights.
