Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO Review: Pros, Cons, and Best Uses

Anyone who’s fired a rifle can attest to the importance of a good scope. When scopes work well they help people fit into nearly any environment. People learn to depend on their scope. As such, it’s important to know exactly how well suited any given option might be. It’s also important to keep in mind that scopes aren’t easily classified.

Scopes usually aren’t objectively good or bad. Rather, they’re good or bad for particular tasks and environments. In this Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO review we’ll look at how it holds up in a variety of situations. By the end, we’ll know exactly when and where the Vortex Diamondback 4 works best.

Vortex Diamondback 4 Pros and Cons

Pros

1. Durability

The Vortex Diamondback 4 provides some remarkable strength. This is largely due to a combination of materials and construction methods.

It’s constructed of a single piece of aircraft grade aluminum. The combination of both elements ensures that it’s extremely durable. The aluminum’s structural integrity keeps it from bending. And the single piece construction ensures that there’s no seems or joints which might break.

2. Moisture resistance

Here too, one sees a dual system which provides superior reliability. The Vortex Diamondback 4 combines O-ring seals with argon purging. The O-ring seal keeps moisture from entering. And argon purging helps remove moisture. This doesn’t simply keep it safe in rain. It even keeps the scope from fogging under normally difficult conditions.

3. Precision glide erector system

Jarring magnification can result in lost shots. One can’t expect someone to toss away glasses and make a shot. Likewise, sudden shifts in scope magnification can create the same effect.

But the Vortex Diamondback 4 utilizes a custom precision glide erector system. This system ensures that magnification feels smooth and natural.

4. Light regulation coating

This Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO review touched on environmental variability within the previous items. But it builds on that environmental adaptability by incorporating a multi-coating system for the lens.

5. Dot designed reticle

Some people may feel this is as much a negative as positive. But if one prefers a simple reticle than the Vortex Diamondback 4 delivers.

It uses a fairly standard design. The main distinctive trait comes from using a dot variant system. But simple also means non-distracting. There’s no quirks or tricks to its reticle. One knows how to use it within seconds of setting an eye on it.

The dot design does assist in one’s focus. But only in a non-distracting and natural way. It simply uses an eye’s natural tendencies to guide a shot. It doesn’t insist that one learn anything about the theory behind that design.

Cons

1. Vision issues for close or distant shots

Just because a scope allows sight at certain distances doesn’t mean it’s crystal clear. For example, one can consider taking a shot which is just at the edge of sight. One can still see the target. But given the choice, a hunter would simply step closer.

A Vortex Diamondback 4 tends to do something similar. One can usually still make shots at the near and far end of its range. But many users feel that it’s rated for distances a bit in excess of what it actually supports. It’s the difference between use and comfortable use.

2. Perhaps a little too simple

One might consider this item as the flip side of its simple reticle design. Overall, the scope pushes for reliability over innovative features. To some this is a benefit.

To others, this lack of features might come off as detrimental. This Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO review item largely depends on how someone relates to their scopes.

3. Shorter than average mounting space

The design is a bit different than standard scopes. This means that one can’t make too many assumptions about proper fits.

The sizing differences are extremely minor. But one might want to keep that in mind when considering it. Ideally one should try before deciding to buy.

4. Durability of pack-in accessories

The scope itself is remarkably durable. But one might want to rethink using its included accessories. The lens protector, for example, isn’t nearly as sturdy as the scope itself.

However, it’s also fairly easy to simply swap it out with properly sized items. It’s only an issue if one doesn’t have a spare lens protector sitting around.

[amazon fields=” B002SCUUBW” value=”button”]

This Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO review highlights some features. But versatility and adaptability continue to come up. The scope’s features make it ideal for people who hunt year round. If someone wants to keep on going even in rain or mist than this should match their intent.

It’s also well suited to firearms with heavy recoil. The Vortex Diamondback 4’s single piece construction ensures that it can stand up to some heavy shocks.

Price

The Vortex Diamondback 4 typically sells for $299.00. This price is fairly competitive when compared to similar scopes.

Verdict

This Vortex Diamondback 4 12×40 AO review has touched on some important points. But the biggest takeaway should relate to durable versatility. These traits aren’t especially notable on a firing range. But they’re a perfect match for hunters who love the outdoors. It holds up in rain, mist and even against stronger recoil. And finally, the price remains fairly competitive. This makes it a solid choice for either a default scope or one to fall back on.

Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 Review

Vortex is a family-owned, veteran-owned company located in Middleton, Wisconsin and has been in business as a retail store since 1986. They started manufacturing optics in 2002 after 16 years of listening to what their customers wanted in a rifle scope. They decided they could deliver and Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review demonstrate they did just that. The Viper PST (Precision Shooting Tactical) has features found in top-of-the-line rifle scopes but at a much better street price. With matching turret and reticle measurements you get fast dialing for accurate shots. The 30mm tube has ample space for elevation and windage adjustments. Add to that quality lenses and Vortex’s CRS zero stop and as you read this Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review you’ll find that it delivers the features and performance you want at the right price.

Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 Review – Pros and Cons

Vortex Viper PST 1 4x24

Pros

1. Solid Construction

The Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24, made from a single piece of aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum, feels rugged and solid. The scope is shockproof, whether it gets jolted from recoil action or from getting bumped. The turret controls are well-made and easy to understand. Turret clicks both feel and sound solid, allowing the shooter to make adjustments without looking up. The zero marking is easy to see in low light and fiber optic lines make it easy to spot reference points for turret rotation and magnification. It does a great job holding zero, even after several re-mounts, recoils, and bangs.

2. CRS Zero Stop

The Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 has the Customizable Rotation Stop feature. Sight the rifle and install the CRS shims. With the CRS design, you have a quick and easy way to return to your original zero after temporary elevation changes. No more concerns about forgetting to count the number of turret revolutions. Just turn the elevation knob counterclockwise to align the radius bar and zero reference and you are back at the original zero point.

3. TMCQ Reticle

The Tactical Milling Close Quarter reticle uses an illuminated, segmented circle around a one MOA dot. When unmagnified, this allows the scope to function like a red dot scope. At full magnification, it acts like a compact scope.

4. Quality Optical

Vortex’s trademarked XD (extra-low dispersion) technology results in accurate colors and increases resolution. With extra-low dispersion glass usually found in more expensive scopes, it is a find having them in a scope at this price level. The result is bright, crisp and sharp images. At 1x, you’ll feel like you are looking through a clear window. Switch to 4x and the dimming is minimal. Specifications say that there is 95% light transmission.

5. Easy To Use Controls

The Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 magnification control turns smooth and its rubber coating makes it easy to grip with no slippage. Brightness settings range from zero to ten, with OFF between each of the settings. This nice feature lets you return to the brightness level you like without having to go through all the settings. The turrets are easy to adjust with just your fingertips. And the focus dial is on the side of the scope out of your field of view.

6. Waterproof. Fog proof

A combination of O-rings and argon gas keep the Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 scope waterproof and fog proof.

7. Size

At only 9.7 inches long, and weighing in at 16.2 ounces, it’s not the lightest scope out there. Still, at just a pound, you won’t feel a major change in the heft of your rifle. And its size makes it small enough to use on a compact carbine.

Vortex Viper PST 1 4x24 scope

Cons

For an honest Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review, it must be mentioned that several users complained about the illumination in bright daylight. It appears to be weak and washes out, especially if the background is also bright.

It is a second focal plane scope and will only range correctly at one magnification setting. If you change the magnification, the result will be a missed shot. And because the reticle size will not change with different magnifications, the Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 may not be the best choice for anyone with poor eyesight.

The crosshair markings are very fine and may be difficult to see against a background that is dark and busy, especially at 1x. However, the markings are easier to read at the higher magnification.

The Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 has a fixed parallax at 100 yards and it is not adjustable. When doing long range shooting, it is important to center the reticle in the tube.

You need to keep an eye on the diopter lens. It turns smoothly, maybe too smoothly. Whether it will turn if it gets bumped is an unanswered question. But because of how easy it turns, there is less confidence it will be in the same position before and after a bump.

Who Is This Product Good For?

Based on a Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review, this scope is good for hunting moving targets and brush and field hunting up to about 300 yards. The 1x magnification makes it a great option for anyone who likes to shoot with both eyes open. Plus, the 1x setting works well for hunters who will need to identify targets and fire at close range. For big game hunters, the low power Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 scope is a good option for use when approaching a wounded animal.

Reading a Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review points out that this is a solid choice for use with close range and moving targets. Reticle adjustments are precise and tactile. It has a center dot surrounded by four semi-circles, making a 22 MOA wide ring, perfect for fast targeting up close. Yet it also provides a precise point to aim for long range shooting. Quality glass gives you a bright and clear image from one side of the scope to the other. Through knocks and bumps and recoil, the Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 will hold its zero. For its price, it will be hard to find a scope with more quality and features. Reading this Vortex Viper PST 1 4×24 review should give you the confidence you need to put one on your rifle.

  • Unusual turret adjustments: The turret adjustments are in MOA rather than mils, which can be quite annoying to effectively use the mil dots correctly.
  • Scope does not illuminate: The riflescope is extremely clear and gathers a sufficient amount of light, but it does not illuminate.
  • Poor eye relief: The eye reliefe is less than 2-inches, creating problems with edge clarity.
  • Mil dot is not great for new users: The mil dot design takes a bit of experience to perfect.
  • This scope contains thick reticles: some users are displeased with the thickness the scope contains.

The riflescope is extremely clear and accurate, and the VIP warranty policy cannot be beaten. The Vortex Viper is a product that is best for hunters. The constant need to dial the drop and windage makes it quite inconvenient, but it is definitely not a deal breaker for most shooters. This riflescope is also an excellent option for tactical use, long range shooting, and target applications.

The Verdict

Overall, the Vortex Viper 6.5 20×50 defines clarity and quality. The scope is reasonably priced and easy to attach to rifles. This riflescope is definitely comparable to others ranging over $1000 in price at only a fraction of the cost. One of the biggest negatives of this riflescope is that the turret adjustments are measured in MOA rather than mils. Other than that, the scope is extremely easy to use.

Although the zoom adjustments are a bit tight, they are manageable and provide crystal clarity at over 1000-yards. The Vortex Viper 6.5 20×50 is a great product that is highly recommended. It consistently receives positive reviews and is extremely reliable.

Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 Review

The Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 riflescope is a new design by Vortex. Whether you are looking for a scope to use while hunting in extreme weather conditions, or want a scope to improve your shooting precision, the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 can do it for you.

Made out of a 35mm diameter one-piece tube, this is a first focal plane scope. It is available in both MOA (Minutes of Angle) with ¼ MOA graduation and MRAD (Milradian) with 0.1 mRad graduation configurations. The quality lens and Vortex propriety lens coating maximize the amount of light transmitted, making it a great scope for using in low light conditions.

Meant for intermediate to long-range hunting or target shooting, features such as parallax correction and minimization of chromatic aberration will bring your shooting up a level. If you are looking for a scope with sharp and bright images throughout the zoom range, you’ve found it with the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50.

Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50

Pros and Cons of the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50

Pros

1. Bright and Clear Image

The Vortex APO (apochromatic) system corrects the color of any light coming into the lens. It works over the full visual spectrum, resulting in minimal chromatic aberration. The glass is high-density extra-low dispersion and coated with Vortex’s proprietary anti-reflective coating XR technology on all glass-to-air surfaces.

2. First Focal Plane Reticle

The Razor HD 5-20 x 50 first focal plane reticle allows you to use holds or set your target range at any magnification. The reticle is glass-etched, allowing for a clear reticle design, and two glass layers protect the etching. A dedicated wheel controls the eleven illumination settings. Set off to the side, the wheel won’t block the turret settings. Between each illumination setting is an OFF setting to allow you to return to your previous setting without going through the entire range.

3. Solid Construction

The one piece 35mm tube means better accuracy through improved alignment. Made out of aircraft-grade aluminum, the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 is rigid and strong. The surface coating has a low-glare matte finish to help camouflage your position when hunting. Plus Vortex proprietary ArmorTek protects the lenses from oil, scratches, and dirt.

4. Waterproof. Fog Proof. Shockproof.

The Razor HD 5-20 x 50 has O-rings to keep out dust, moisture, and debris. Purging with argon gas keeps the lenses from fogging. The solid construction protects the scope from impact and recoil.

5. Side Focus

Located on the left side of the turret is the side focus. It is easy to access when in a shooting position and provides parallax removal and optimal image sharpness.

6. Rapid Zero Return

The Rapid Zero Return (RZR) feature allows the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 easy and fast zero point return. Without RZR, the shooter must pay close attention and count the number of revolutions when dialing big corrections. With RZR Zero Stop, you can spin the elevation knob back to its original zero without having to worry about counting turns.

Vortex Razor HD 5-20x50

Cons

The biggest negative item is the weight of this scope. At 35.2 oz., it is heavy and the 35mm diameter makes it big and bulky.

Some of the accessories that come with the Razor HD 5-20 x 50 could be eliminated, with a resulting price cut in the cost of the lens. The Flip-up scope caps are barely usable and not of the quality you would expect from Vortex. You might find use for the included sunshade but the scope is already long at 15.8 inches. Adding the 4-inch sunshade just makes the scope that much longer.

The Anti-Reflection Device works well but because it is a tight grid, a lot of light gets blocked. Not the best device to use in a low light situation. One thing the Razor HD 5-20 x 50 doesn’t come with are mounting rings and there is some limitation in options because of the 35mm diameter. You can buy them from Vortex and which rings you use will depend on your rifle. Some shooters felt that the low rings were too low on some rifles and medium rings made for a better setup.

While it should be simple to zero the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50, the zero stop feature makes it a bit complicated. You need to loosen set screws and remove the elevation turret caps. Then follow several intricate steps listed in the manual before replacing the cap and tightening the screws.

As a first focal plane reticle, it can be hard to see the target when used in low light with low magnification and a cluttered background. If this is the environment you’ll be shooting in, have a spare CR2032 battery handy because you’ll be using the scope’s illumination a lot.

Depending on the purpose for this scope, 5x magnification may not be low enough for the desired field of vision to track moving targets. And at 20x, the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 has a very narrow field of view.

Who Is This Product Best For?

The Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 is best for shooters who will be shooting long range. As compared to a more common 30mm tactical scope, the wide 35mm tube has more room inside for the erector assembly. The result is a scope with a wide range of windage and elevation adjustment. At 1000 yards, elevation is a big concern so whether shooting competition or tactical, this scope can handle it.

When compared to other scopes in its price range, the Vortex Razor HD 5-20×50 ranks well. The fast focus eyepiece allows for quick and easy focusing. Vortex’s Radius Bar provides a tactile reference point for turret turns and there is a fiber optic rotation indicator. Turret clicks are firm and, once set it does a great job at holding zero. With the high-end optical quality, the precise and solid elevation and windage adjustments, the Razor HD 5-20 x 50 feels, handles, and looks solid, exactly what you would expect from Vortex.

Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 Review: Should You Add It to Your Rifle?

If you need a scope that will cover every range, you want to consider the Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 to add to your rifle. Vortex Optics is a reliable manufacturer that creates quality products and could enhance your shooting experience. But is this accessory the right scope to take out into the field this season?

It’s helpful to know that three to nine represents the range of magnification, and 40 is the size of the objective. This is the area that gathers light at the front of the scope. Although you can buy a scope with a bigger objective, it can add weight or affect the ability to securely mount on an AR-15 rifle. Choose from three reticles, including a standard V-Plex, Dead-Hold BDC, and V-Bright types.

The Pros & Cons

[amazon fields=”B00HYRGSTO” value=”thumb” image_size=”large”]
[amazon fields=”B00HYRGSTO” value=”button”]

Pros

  • Choose it if you need a rugged scope. The Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 is durable and constructed for rugged, shock-proof use.
  • Buy clarity. It allows you to see targets well. The optics quality of the Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 is excellent. Clarity of scope is an important factor.
  • Consider your natural minimum eye relief range. The minimum eye relief is within the natural range. Minimum eye relief answers how far away from your eye must be to see clearly through the scope. The 9×40 minimum eye relief at 3x magnification is about 3.8 inches.
  • Know the importance of full multi-coating vs. other optics variables. The optics are fully multi-coated to ensure comfortable viewing in light and darkness. It’s designed to allow maximum transmission of light and desirable brightness.
  • Prevent fogging in weather or high humidity conditions. This scope is sealed to prevent objective fogging. Fog proofing is often referred to as nitrogen-purging as well.
  • Use in light and darkness. Lets plenty of light in for shooting in dim light at dusk.
  • Caps on the turrets come off easily. Just rotate caps a couple of times. The Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 caps are made of aluminum so you can grasp them really well.
  • Note the Vortex VIP Warranty. Vortex’s unlimited lifetime warranty is also transferable.

Cons

  • Get accustomed to the focus rings. The focus rings of the Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 need a little more pressure than competitive models, such as the Nikon Buckmaster II to rotate.
  • Buy what you need. You might not need the Dead-Hold BDC version if you always zero the rifle to its maximum point blank range (MPBR) of load/cartridge used.
  • Don’t over adjust. The Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 windage and elevation adjusters are designed with fingertip elevation and windage knobs.
  • Know your MOA preferences. The Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 range of adjustment maximum is 60 MOA for both elevation and windage. Competitors like the Nikon Buckmaster II offer adjustment maximums of 80 MOA or more.

Who Is This Product Best For?

Shooters and hunters benefit most from the Vortex Crossfire II 3 9×40 line of riflescopes. Use with AR-15 rifles. These scopes are great for hunting at medium to long-range (up to about 425 yards) or up close when necessary. Dial back to three times magnification to shoot at 7 yards or so.
