Nikon ProStaff 5 & 7 Take Hunting to a Different Level

The Nikon ProStaff models have been true and dedicated companions to hunters everywhere for as long as we can remember. For decades, they’ve made sure that you not only set your sight on a nice prize but that you actually shoot and hit. So dedicated to their craft, Nikon know to bring the best quality of rifle scopes built with paramount craftsmanship to the humble consumer for an equally humble price.

The value for money is just huge. They know how to do business. And you can see that by how well their products have fared over the last decades. They’ve sold countless scopes, making innumerable hunters and family protectors all over the hinterland of forests and untamed wilderness able to prove themselves on top of the food chain.

Nikon ProStaff 5

Nikon ProStaff models today make a silent majority of rifle owners stay on target, ready and able to down any kind of wild animal, be it small, medium, or big game. While they keep silent admirers of the Nippon brand, these men and women are not so silent anymore when they put their camo uniform on and their eye to the Nikon ProStaff 3-9×40’s sight.

Speaking of which, if there ever was a testimony to the reliability of the Nikon ProStaff rifle scope models, this is it. The Nikon ProStaff 3-9×40 is renowned for its versatility and flair, for its sleek look and top-of-the-line optics. All of this for an incredibly reasonable price. Makes one wonder why they decided to discontinue this amazing scope (more about this here).

While you can still find the Nikon ProStaff 3-9×40 for sale second hand, we would recommend taking a look at the newest Nikon ProStaff models. I’m talking, of course, about the Nikon ProStaff 5 and the Nikon ProStaff 7. In the following two sections of this review, we will be detailing all the information we have about these incredible optics devices.

Nikon ProStaff 5: Models & Specs

The ProStaff 5 is now the signature Nikon ProStaff rifle scope. Currently, there are a total of 18 models of the Nikon Prostaff 5. These range from the basic 2.5-10×40 Matte Nikoplex at 275.95 to the incredibly complex 4.5-18×40 SF Illuminated Reticle BDC coming in at 579.95. The latter presents some of the most sophisticated types of technology that you can see today mounted on a gun. Here are some of the amazing features of the ProStafdf 5 models:

  • Multicoated Optical System. A distinctive feature of the ProStaff models, the multicoated optical system enhances contrast and boosts luminosity accordingly. The image will appear sharp and the target will be clearly distinguished from the noisy background.
  • The Nikon Spot on System. This one is based on signature ballistic match technology created by Nikon themselves. It compensates for the type of cartridge that you are carrying so that all of your shots, no matter the bullet, will always strike where you want them to.
  • Unique BDC Signature Reticle. No matter how near or how far, your sight will stay put and you’ll be able to take home the hunt of your dreams. The ballistic circles in the reticle are made so that you can see through them. While being of great advantage when far away from the target, these rings are designed so they will also help when you’re close to the target.
  • Reticle Adjustment System. Their instant zero-reset turrets make sure that your tweaking with the Nikon Prostaff rifle scope while out hunting won’t completely ruin the calibration. Essentially, this acts like a memory function, keeping in mind your last used settings.
  • Customizable Custom Turrets. Using the Spot On system, you too can customize your dial so that it best fits you, your rifle, and your preferred bullets. This poses an incredible advantage to stock sights.
  • Ability to Adapt to Sunshade. Some Nikon ProStaff 5 models have the option to add a 40mm and/or a 50mm sunshade objective. This will keep out any form of glare and will block any dust and rain from sticking to the lens.

Add all these awesome features to the fact that the Nikon ProStaff 5 is waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and also fog proof, and you’ve got yourself an incredible scope. Both for your rifle and your hunting trips. The Illuminated reticle versions also come with colorful lights to take your marksmanship to the next level.

Nikon ProStaff 7: Models & Specs

Nikon ProStaff 5 & 7The ProStaff 7 is comparable to the ProStaff 5. It all comes down to preference, because in the performance department, some of the ProStaff 7 are better than some of the Nikon Prostaff 5, or the other way around. If should also be noted that the cheapest of the 10 ProStaff enters the market at about 299.99 (the 2.5-10×42 Matte Nikoplex), while the most expensive one is sold for 499.99 (the 4-16×50 SF Matte BDC). Here are the stand-out features of the ProStaff 7 (note that there are fewer features since most of the ProStaff 5 features also apply here):

  • 30mm body tube. The body tube of the Nikon ProStaff 7 is made so that it weighs as little as possible for as much durability and strength as possible.
  • Smooth Zooming Controls. You put your eye to the sight, you aim correctly, and you shoot. The zoom adjustment is so smooth, there’s absolutely no chance of dizziness while you’re hunting your big game from 500 yards away.
  • Bigger adjustment range. The adjustment range for the windage and elevation levels is much, much higher than for the ProStaff 5. Therefore, the Nikon ProStaff 7 is far better for things like long-distance hunting. The accuracy levels for some of the higher priced ProStaffs is simply surreal.

We know these don’t seem like much for the ProStaff 7, but remember to add them on top of all the others, and we’ve got ourselves a sight for sore eyes (not literally). Frankly, when it comes to recommending one of the two Nikon ProStaff models that are currently considered top of the line, we’re at a loss. They both are great.

Conclusion

What do you think of the Nikon ProStaff models? Do you like the new ones or would you prefer some of the old ones like the Nikon ProStaff 3-9×40, the Nikon ProStaff 4-12×40, or the 3-9×50? After all, most of the ProStaff riflescopes are incredible, and we here at Rifle Scope Center are confident that whichever you’ll pick, you’ll be making a good choice.

8. Burris Eliminator III 4-16x50mm

Not one of the cheaper options on this list of long range rifle scopes, the Burris Eliminator III is a very sturdy sight for your rifle. Named as one of the best rifle scopes on the planet, you know it means business. It’s sturdy and robust but lightweight, it’s really sleek, but it can really pack a punch no matter how far you are from your target.

The best feature of the Burris Eliminator III is its reticle. The X96 is an amazing reticle – it has a powered display which draws energy from a small battery (which you can change very easily though you rarely need to). On it, you will be able to see displayed the distance from the target in yards as well as an estimate of how many dots you need to account for depending on the wind.

It can down targets with ease and it’s 25x zoom makes certain that it will see as far as 1,800 yards. Still, most hunters and professional shooters don’t need that much zoom.

The Nightforce ATACR works amazingly at lower ranges. It features the MIL-R-5 Mils Reticle with very intricate windage adjustment capabilities.

5. Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27×56mm

With the zooming capabilities of this amazing scope, you know the Vortex Razor HD is ready for that wild hunting trip you’ve been planning. Snipers will simply love this rifle scope along with its amazing reticle. If there’s one word that defines the ProStaff 5 3.5-14x50mm, that word is “exceptional.” If you don’t agree with us, you should check out our article on Nikon Rifle Scopes before you go on.

Top Best AR 15 Scopes For You

All that power will be useless unless you can actually hit your target which gives you all the more reasons to buy a scope. Though finding one can be a little bit tricky since you have to take note of several factors like material build, glass quality and reticle especially that you will be using this in the most fragile and rugged of situations. Compared to spotting scopes, rifle scopes are small and can be easily attached on top of a rifle for combat mobility. You can also use red dot sights for your Ar 15.

Best AR 15 Scopes Guide

If you are still new to this kind of category and technology then you will be finding it hard to choose the best AR 15 scope that will fit your needs since there are a lot of products in the market having several different features. Don’t worry though because we have narrowed down that search by accumulating all the best AR 15 scopes in their category and placed them in the table below for easy comparison.

[amazon box=”B00BAHMHQW,B004KRA4YG,B006YVT0R8,B00SMX9CS8,B00AU6EIIY,B004MY5L9U,B079GQQGFV,B00SMX8RIE,B00ABP5UXG,B005UGIMNQ” template=”table”]

The Road to the Purchase of the best AR 15 Scope

The table shows only a small amount of information and by this time you still have no clear idea of how to really pick a rifle scope. Don’t worry since the discussion doesn’t end with the comparison table, its main purpose was just to narrow down your choices than going about into the entire market of rifle scopes. If you really want to get the best out of your rifle then here is a guide to help you make up your mind from the 5 products in the comparison table.

  • Magnification –the main idea of getting a scope is to see targets that are of a distance and this is all dependent with the magnification. There are two types: variable and fixed power. A scope that has a range instead of a constant magnification is a variable and is preferred at all times.
  • Reticle of the best AR 15 scope – other than the purpose of seeing distant objects, you would want to use your scope to hit a target accurately which is the purpose of the reticle. It is commonly termed as crosshairs is what you see as the cross in the middle of your scope. There are many variations, you have dot and duplex. Each is good at certain occasions like duplex for camouflage operations and dot for distant contact operations.
  • Parallax – this is a more technical feature that is quite hard to explain. If you have a scope that has magnification more than 10x then you will be experiencing that the reticle constantly comes off the middle without even moving the scope. This is what you call parallax and it is necessary to have adjustable objective lenses for to counter-act this phenomenon.
  • Eye-relief – the distance between the scope and your eye that still gives a full-image is called the eye-relief. This is vital since rifles have recoils and if you have your eyes too close to the scope, you might actually experience getting a black eye.
  • Minute of Angle (MOA) – if you have a scope that has a specification of ¼ MOA, this means that for every click of adjustment, the bullet lands ¼ inches from the specified bull’s eye of the scope. This is used for adjustment purposes and not really that essential for beginners.

A rifle scope doesn’t need much magnification power so its specification of 4-12x40 is already an overkill in terms of magnification. If you cannot understand what this means, it stands for variable magnification power between 4 to 12x with an exit objective lens of 40mm in diameter.
The exit lens is not too big nor too small and being paired with Nikon’s multi-coating formula, light is less likely to be reflected from the lens for a brighter and clearer image quality. Along with a total length of 19 inches and average weight of 2.2 pounds, it is highly-versatile and portable. You wouldn’t be able to feel any changes in the gun’s weight when the scope is mounted.
The reticle also maximizes the rifle’s capability with its BDC 600 opening circle aiming points. What’s great about this is that the open circle changes accordingly depending on the distance of the target and will be functional as long as the target is within the range between 100 and 600 yards.
Additionally, it has a ¼ MOA accompanied by easy to adjust spring-loaded turrets. They are also instant zero reset turrets for fast adjustments especially if your target is on the run.
If you compare this with its other version still having the name Ninkon P-223 3-9x40, you can see that there is not much difference other than the magnification power. Since it has a maximum magnification power of only 9x, it no longer needs the parallax adjustment compared to the 4-12x40. All in all, this comes at a price of .

This is still one of those low magnification rifle scopes good for close quarter combat but with a little bit added specification. Rather than having only 1x, this one is equipped with 2x magnification with an objective lens size of 30mm in diameter. The 2x magnification isn’t much different from the 1x but could at least identify more minor details along with a wide field of view.
The equipped reticle can change color from red or green,as opposed to its twin the SF-BR-AR15 which only has the choice of the bright red color, and it is capable of changing light intensities for easy contrast in most situations. Being multi-coated rather than amber colored, it allows more light to be seen for brighter images. It is also a 4 MOA diameter reticle with ½ MOA adjustments. In terms of wind and elevation adjustments, it has a maximum of 100 MOA.
You also don’t have to worry about parallax adjustments since it is parallax free at most of 50 yards. Just like all other scopes in this low magnification category, it is fog and water proof for uninterrupted performance plus it comes with covers to protect both the objective and main lens of the scope.

[amazon fields=”B00AU6EIIY” value=”button”]

If you are not into hunting or in need of any form of magnification then this scope is worth a try. It is plainly simple and nothing much to offer with its fixed power of only 1x and has an objective lens of 32mm.
It has a 3 MOA T-dot reticle that can be colored green or red depending on your preferences.

The reticle is easy to see especially that it has an amber colored lens to be able to see in dark places during operations. There is also Zoom dot option that allows you to adjust your standard reticle between 1 MOA to 10 MOA to increase field of view but with the standard 3 MOA, you have a field of view of 44 feet at 100 yards.
This scope concentrated more on its rugged functionality since it is made for fast paced multi-event operations so it is all-around hard from water, fog and shock proof. Also, at an average length of 6.75 inches and weight of 15.6 inches, it is nearly unobservable on your rifle scope.
Though this scope is highly comparable to the TRS-25 with 1x25mm specification. The only problem with this one is that it has a smaller objective lens that limits the field of view and the inclined lens is purposed to make the reticle more accurate while also decreasing the total length of the scope. The disadvantage is that the reticle lighting must be regularly adjusted depending on the situation which makes this the loser of the two scopes.

Conclusion

There are several types of rifle scopes you can choose from and some vary significantly than the others. If you know what you are looking for then the process of choosing is made easier but if you are not sure of what you want, don’t worry since there is a simple to follow guide. Overall, getting the Best AR 15 Scopes are tricky and you might need expert help but in the end, it is all going to be worth all the investment.
